more maine coon infomation
The Maine Coon is a semi longhair cat. The coat is soft and silky, although texture may vary. The length is shorter on the head and shoulders , and longer on the stomach and flanks with some adult cats having a lion-like ruff (mane) around their neck. Maine Coons have long bushy tails, big tufted paws, large eyes and ears and a squarish muzzle. Regular grooming is required for the breed, even though their coat is mostly self maintaining. The coat is subject to seasonal variation, with the fur being thicker in the winter and thinner during summer. Maine Coons can be seen in all colours except pointed colours like the Siamese.
Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds of domestic cat. Males can weigh in at between 6 to 10 kgs with females weighing between 3.5 to 6 kgs. The height of adults can vary between 25 and 41 cms and they can reach a length of up to 100cms including the tail, which can reach lengths of up to 36 cms and is long, tapering and heavily furred. The body is solid and muscular with a broad but well proportioned chest. Maine Coons have a rectangular body shape and are slow to physically mature. Their full potential size is normally not reached until around three to four years of age.. Their disposition remain kittenish throughout their lives, they are big, gentle, good natured goofs! Even their voices set them apart from other cats as they have a distinctive, chirping trill. They rarely meow, and when they do, that soft, tiny voices doesn't fit their size.
Some Maine Coons enjoy playing with, but not usually in, water. They may dip their toys in their water bowls before playing with them, or just tip the water bowl over. They may also skim their paws across the surface of their water bowl. This is one of the reasons I suggest you leave the toilet seat down!Maine Coons can be very "dog like" in their behaviour. Playing fetch is a favourite game. As with dogs , some will even bring their ball, drop it at the feet of their intended playmate, and wait patiently for it to be thrown.
While Maine Coons are highly people orientated , they are not overly dependent. They do not constantly pester you for attention, but prefer to "hang out" with their owners, investigating whatever activity you're involved in and "helping" when they can. They are not, as a general rule, "lap cats", but as with any personality trait there are a few Maine Coons that prefer laps. Most Maine Coons will stay close by, probably occupying the chair next to yours, or the back of the sofa instead. Maine Coons will follow you from room to room and wait outside your bathroom door for you to emerge.
The Maine Coon is an ideal family cat that will get along well with children and other pets, including dogs. here is one advantage of this breed which you should remember when you open doors to a maine Coon. One Maine Coon is never enough and having got yourself a "Coonie" at home you'll soon be looking for a second one !
